The Wilkes-Barre YMCA
Comprehensive Multi-use Historic Renovation Wilkes-Barre, PA 2012This comprehensive Historic Tax Credit renovation project of the 1933 Wilkes-Barre YMCA required the complete reconfiguration of 97,000 SF on 7 floors.
The project had started in 2010 with a Space Utilization Study and Master Plan, an effort that led to the reccommendation that the institution would be best served by condensing the YMCA facilities into the lower 4 floors and developing student housing apartments on the upper 3 floors as off-campus apartments for students at nearby Wilkes University.
The construction phase was completed in 9 months and required the introduction of a new interior ramp over 60' in length, the filing of the original pool and its conversion into the new Wellness Center for aerobic and cardio equipment, as well as the relocation of a historic staircase to accomodate new ADA access, and a new elevator to connect all YMCA levels through a new dedicated interor route.
The student apartments included both single-story and duplex apartments.
